• Provide a thorough social history investigation
• Prepare a sentencing report
• Pre-screen the defendant to identify treatment and other needs
• Make referral to appropriate expert and treatment programs

• Explore case options in consultation with the attorney
• Act as a liaison between the lawyer and the defendant
• Contact victims and facilitate requests for restorative justice
• Obtain effective character support letters from friends and relatives

• Assist client in writing statement for court appearance
• Assist in the coordination of events at sentencing hearing
• Provide regular updates to the attorney as agreed upon or as necessary

Attorney Responsibilities in the Consulting Process:

• Bring the Sentencing Consultant into the case as early as possible
• Communicate clearly expectations of the defense
• Keep the Sentencing Consultant informed of case developments and court hearing dates
• Maintain a willingness to listen to ideas

• Provide the Sentencing Consultant with any needed resources
• Work with the Sentencing Consultant in obtaining pertinent records as needed (court orders)
• Prepare for anticipated testimony and cross-examination
